PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITION

This is a thoroughly revised and enlarged fifth edition of this book. After the sad demise of Mian Goverdhan Singh ji, the book could not be made available to the readers for the last four years. Due to the persistent demand of the students, researchers and general readers, the publishers of this book M/s Minerva Book House,The Mall, Shimla requested me to revise this book. I had translated this book in Hindi for the benefit of readers a few years ago. While going through the contents of this book I was amazed to see the brevity, clarity and authenticity of the contents. Revising this book has been a rewarding experience. Mianji wrote this book in 1985 and revised it from time to time. This is one of the very few books on Himachal, which gives the readers a very clear and authentic view of its history, politics, economy and cultural life through ages. The style is refreshingly charming and all the relevant details have been incorporated in the book, without making it voluminous. Chapter on Economy has been updated, revised and enlarged by Dr. Kulbhushan Chandel who has taken great pains in doing this work. Thanks are due to him for doing this work which has made this book more useful.
